This results in negative comments towards Atticus family, and his children have to put up with it. One insult from Mrs. Dubose makes Jem so sensitive that he destroys her Camilla bushes, and his punishment is to read to her for a month. Old and addicted to morphine, Mrs. Dubose wants to exertion to overcome her addiction before she dies.
